“Why Is Taking the First Step So Hard?”

Writer's picture: Dr Sule UnalDr Sule Unal

Have you ever noticed how even the smallest change can feel like climbing a mountain? Whether it’s starting a new habit, scheduling that long-overdue dental appointment, or simply deciding to take better care of yourself – that first step always feels like the hardest.

But why?

Our brain, in all its brilliance, has a built-in alarm system that sees change as a potential threat. It prefers the comfort of routine, even if that routine isn’t serving us well. This is why starting something new can trigger hesitation, procrastination, and even a little anxiety.

So, what can we do?

Start small.

A simple phone call to book a dental check-up. A short walk instead of a full workout. Tiny steps that your brain won’t recognize as “threatening” but will still lead to progress.

Before you know it, that small step becomes momentum. And with each step forward, the mountain feels a little smaller.

Remember, the hardest part is just getting started. What’s one small step you can take today?
